I have read a lot of seed catalogues cover to cover in the past 25 years. I know the jargon; 5M @ $8.95/M takes a second to calculate, but gives a way to compare prices between companies; a flowery description extolling the beauty and robustness of a variety probably means that it’s not a very disease-tolerant or flavorful type; transparency in seed sourcing is appreciated honesty (most companies don’t grow the seed they sell). These days, I focus on companies that offer at least some certified organic seed. I look for varieties I know, and when they aren’t available, I know the plant qualities that I need to ensure a good crop in a particular harvest window. There is always room for experimentation, as new varieties are introduced and others are recommended by a trusted farmer. Selecting the right variety for our climate, harvest window, and market is one of the big challenges of being a vegetable farmer. Also, one of the best parts!

As an exciting extension of this work, I am putting in a few hours each week (just for a few months this winter) at the Seed Savers Exchange seed house. I’m on the shipping crew, filling orders for gardeners and farmers around the country (and some around the world). This is their busy time of year, with orders coming in faster than they can ship them out. I expect we’ll get caught up in a month or so.

It’s fascinating and thrilling to be in the midst of all that seed magic. I know that some folks ordered a few funky heirlooms because of a beautiful catalog description or picture – they may go untended or even unplanted, but they may brighten someone’s day in a profound way. Other customers will probably end up with a ‘dud’ tomato variety that just doesn’t perform in their climate. Some young farmer may be counting on selling heirloom dry beans with good backstories at their winter farmers’ market. Seed buyers may make a living selling their bounty, or they will feed their family, or they will bring color to their city block by sharing morning glories. Seed magic is all healthy, bright and shiny, hopeful and endless. I’m glad to be a part of it.
